Before joining The Colony Health and Fitness, this member had never been to a gym before.
Like many people, she found the idea of walking into one intimidating — it just seemed scary.
But one day, she saw a Facebook advert for The Colony and decided to be brave.
That one moment changed everything.
The Challenge
She started with no gym experience and very little confidence.
Her goal wasn’t just to lose weight or “get fit” — it was to build strength and energy so she could live life to the fullest and support her family.
As a mum to an 11-year-old amputee, she often needs to carry him when his leg hurts — and that’s a challenge most people can’t imagine.
Why She Nearly Didn't Start
For years, she’d avoided gyms because they felt intimidating and unwelcoming.
But after joining The Colony, she realised straight away she didn’t need to be scared.
The coaches, the members, and the atmosphere made her feel at ease from day one.
The Turning Point
Once she started training, her confidence grew — not just in the gym, but in everyday life.
She quickly discovered what her body was capable of.
Her strength skyrocketed:
- When she started, she could back squat 20kg
- Now she lifts over 82kg — more than four times her starting point!
And the progress didn’t stop there.
She began taking on challenges she never would have dreamed of before — obstacle races, 10Ks, and even social events on her own.
The Results
Since joining, she’s achieved:
✅ Massive increases in strength and endurance
✅ Confidence to take on new challenges — both in and out of the gym
✅ Completed Bourne Survivor and a 10K race in one hour
✅ Improved energy and fitness to keep up with (and carry!) her son
✅ The confidence to show up to gym events solo — and actually enjoy them
Here’s what she had to say:
“I’d never been to a gym before — it seemed really scary. Then I saw a Facebook advert and thought I’d be brave, and I didn’t need to be scared. I’ve got more energy, I can piggyback my son when his leg hurts, and every time I do it I say, ‘You’re lucky I go to the gym!’ I started squatting 20kg and now it’s 82.5kg. I’ve done obstacle races, a 10K, and even come to parties on my own. It’s changed everything.”
